The weirdest things ever found washed up on beaches

Found washed up on beaches

Australia's coastline stretches almost 50,000 kilometres.

It’s also made up of over 10,000 beaches, which means it would take you 27 odd years to visit one per day.

Knowing this, it’s easy to imagine that lots and lots of different items wash up on our shores every year. Some of these items are to be expected, such as fishing tackle or driftwood. Other items are a little bit more bizarre.

In this article, we dive into the weirdest things ever found washed up on beaches around the world. From thousands of colourful toy eggs to an adult-sized Lego man, these objects don’t belong on the sand.

WWII fighter plane

In 2007 a WWII fighter aircraft was found on a beach in Wales - more than 60 years after it was reported as crashed.

According to the original report, the plane went down during a routine training exercise. Called the Maid of Harlech, both of its engines died and it plunged nose first into the ocean. Fortunately, the pilots were able to eject before it hit the water.

Whale chunder

Yep, you read that correctly. In 2012 an eight-year-old boy from England by the name of Charlie kicked his toe on a large clump of whale vomit - otherwise known as ambergris.

For those who don’t know, ambergris is incredibly rare and therefore very valuable. It’s a key ingredient in perfume and other luxury items and this particular piece of whale spew was estimated to be worth $65,000.

Toy eggs

If you were a German kid with a fondness for toy eggs, January 2017 must have been a glorious month.

The reason for this is that kids on the North Sea Island of Langeoog awoke to thousands of colourful plastic eggs resting on the beaches surrounding the island. The eggs, which even contained mini toys inside of them, came from a Danish freight ship that had lost a container overboard in stormy weather.

All of the eggs were eventually cleaned up and needless to say, Easter wasn’t as exciting as it was in years prior.

Rubber ducks

Wondering why you haven’t seen a rubber ducky in a bathtub for decades now? Well, it could be because all of them are lost at sea.

In 1992, a shipping container fell of a ship in the Pacific Ocean, spilling the contents of said container, which just happened to be 28,000 rubber ducks sent from Hong Kong.

Apparently, these rubber ducks are still washing up on shorelines around the world to this day, with some found in Australia, Canada, USA and Ecuador. So, if you spot a rubber ducky bobbing on the current at your local beach, now you know where it came from!

Oversized driftwood

Ok, we admit that driftwood on a beach isn’t anything special. However, surely the size of the driftwood comes into play when determining whether it’s weird or not.

For example, did you know that oversized pieces of driftwood often wash up on beaches on the East Coast of the United States?

When we say oversized, we mean it too - some measure over 100 feet in length and can weight tonnes. They’ve even been renamed driftlogs given that they’re more substantial than a simple plank of wood.

Giant Lego man

Employees at a beach bar in 2012 were mildly perplexed when they rocked up for work and noticed a strange object being tossed around by the waves.

They then decided to wade in for a closer look and were shocked to discover that the strange object was indeed a giant life-sized Lego man.

They proceeded to drag it to shore and leave it on the beach. Oddly, nobody knows where this Lego man came from. Perhaps they could ask around to see if any Lego boats recently capsized in the area?

Novelty Garfield phones

Garfield the cat comic strips were the first strip to be published around the world, making their way into newspapers and books from Beirut to Brisbane.

In the 1980s, Garfield became particularly famous on the beaches of Brittany, France, when hordes of his novelty home phones began washing up on the shoreline.

Like the giant Lego man, nobody knew where these Garfield phones came from.

That is, up until 2019, when the shipping container that was carrying them was found in an underwater sea cave.
