Top 8 popular Australian festivals this summer

Australian festivals this summer

Summer is here and that means we’ll be spending less time indoors and more time in the sun. And what better way to enjoy the awesome weather than listening to great tunes or watching epic short films with friends at a festival!

If that sounds like a good plan to you, then you’re in luck. We talked to an industry insider about the most popular Australian festivals. The results? Well, let’s just say that this is the definitive guide when it comes to the best events in Oz this summer!

Illawarra Folk Festival – Jamberoo, NSW – January 13th to January 16th

If you love folk music and frilly clothes, then you’ll love the Illawarra Folk Festival. This traditional music festival is one of the most celebrated events of the year.

There are over 300 mini concerts to enjoy plus delicious international cuisine sold at multiple food stalls. You can even pick up a souvenir in the form of handcrafts or local wares – the choice is yours.

This festival is enjoyed by both locals and tourists alike looking for fun yet mellow vibes and excellent food. Plus, the township of Jamberoo is pretty beautiful to boot.

Chinese New Year Festival – Sydney, NSW – February 12th to February 21st

The Chinese New Year Festival in Sydney is non-stop action and entertainment. There’s a night market, traditional Chinese celebrations, a lion dance and even dragon boat races. So, of course it’s one of the most popular Australian festivals on the calendar. It’ll make you wish that the Chinese celebrated New Year more than once in a calendar year.

Falls Festival – Australia Wide – December 28th to January 8th

On what can only be described as one of the most successful Australian music festivals, Fall Festival attracts people from all over the country and the world.

It’s held in various cities around Australia from New Year’s Eve to early January. It also features popular music artists, dance performances and other types of theatre. If this sounds like you’re jam, Falls Festival is more than worth the price of admission.

The vibe is famously good-natured and as far as ushering in the New Year goes… this is a pretty good gig! Unfortunately, Falls Festival won’t go ahead this year, but they’ve already got big plans for next year’ iteration.

Cygnet Folk Festival – Cygnet, TAS – January 14th to January 16th

Whether your deep into the folk festival circuit or this is your first visit, the Cygnet Folk Festival will provide.

Held in Tasmania, it runs for three days and is known for being a super welcoming event that can be enjoyed by all ages. Myriad talented local, national and overseas artists come to perform and it’s a great way to see lots of quality acts all in one place.

In addition to the music and dancing though, there’s also plenty of cultural and artistic activities that will keep you entertained between sets.

Knight and Day Festival – Ballarat, VIC – December 30th to December 31st

Love punk, metal or good old fashion rock? Then the Knight and Day Festival in Ballarat is worth a gander. Taking place over an entire weekend, this brand-new festival brings the best musicians from these genres together for two days of head-banging chaos.

The lineup for this year boasts an assortment of major local acts, such as Parkway Drive, in addition to Hellions and Windwaker. Of course, there are heaps more bands and artists set to play at Knight and Day. If that doesn’t get you pumped though, the festival will also be held in a faux medieval castle in Ballarat!

Summer Camp Festival – Australia Wide – February 26th to March 7th

In what will be the inaugural iteration of this event, the Summer Camp Festival in Melbourne is a guaranteed good time.

According to organisers, it’s designed to be like a ‘summer camp’ for adults. Expect music and art culture events plus a playground of exciting activities to enjoy. As Australia’s first touring pride festival, it’ll also be making history as it travels around the country.

Beyond the Valley – Lardner, VIC – December 28th to January 1st

Beyond the Valley was cancelled last year, but it’ll take more than just a global pandemic to stop it in 2021. Plus, with past lineups that included Skepta and Tyler The Creator, it was only a matter of time before it roared back to life once again.

Better yet, if you booked tickets for the 2020/2021 Beyond the Valley music and camping festival, you can still use them for 2021/2022. So, get ready for a memorable four-day celebration at Beyond the Valley (and to make up for lost fun due to last year’s cancellation).

Tropfest – Sydney, NSW – February 28th (2022) to February 5th (2023)

While we love a good music festival, it’s nice to mix things up once and while. Why not embrace your inner film critic and check out Tropfest in Sydney?

It’s regarded as the largest short film festival in the world and it draws in thousands of cinephiles and creatives every year. A number of the short films premiered there have gone on to win awards. Many of which were created and directed by novice talent.

It’s perfect for short attention spans too, since each film takes less than 7 minutes. Finally, the festival is broadcast live to multiple cities in Australia, which means you don’t even need to be in Sydney to see it.
