If you eat these foods then chances are you’re Australian

Then chances are you’re Australian!

There are lots of obscure ways to tell if someone is an Aussie.

Like, do they wear a wide-brimmed hat with corks dangling from the rim? Or do they say “G’day” when you meet them? Perhaps the best way to spot a Down Under bloke or sheila though is to ask whether they love the following foods. And if they say "Too right, mate", then you know you've got an Aussie on your hands.

Zooper Doopers

Zooper Doopers are a beloved Australian ice block.

They come in a range of flavours from tropical fruits to bubblegum and cola, and feature iconic images on the wrappers. Summer and Zooper Doopers go together like Vegemite and avocado (we'll get to that shortly). And so long as you know how to cut the top off to ensure you don't nick your lip, we're sure they're a winner in your family too.

Pavlova

It's one of the most famous desserts in the world. And surprise, surprise... it originated right here in Australia.

The classic pavlova is a meringue cake topped with whipped cream, strawberries and kiwi fruit, but you can also find some wacky creations like chocolate pavlova for example. Normally served at parties and available pre-made from all bakeries and supermarkets, pavlova really is an Aussie idol.

Vegemite

Ahhh... Vegemite. According to people from overseas, we Aussies run on it. But truth be told, Vegemite is actually eaten quite sparingly.

You might put a dash on your toast in the morning before adding a few slices of avo or perhaps you add it to your boiled rice for a salty umami hit. This black spread is a much-loved national staple, but only if you know the secret behind it – just the right amount makes all the difference.

Lamingtons

Invented by the now-famous Lord Lamington, these sweet treats are a must-have at any Australian kids' party.

Lamingtons consist of sponge cake covered in chocolate icing and then rolled in coconut. They're so popular that there are even lamington-flavoured ice creams available, not to mention the contentious lamington-flavoured chips. Wait... are they really a thing now?

Sausage sanga

The humble sausage sanga (short for sandwich) is the foundation of any good Aussie diet. And with barbeques being such a popular pastime in Australia, you can bet your last dollar that every bloke and sheila has eaten at least 5 in the last year.

But what makes the sausage sanga so delicious? We reckon it's the fact that you can top it with whatever condiments you like – tomato sauce and BBQ sauce being two of the most popular options. Add a few sauteed onions and voila! You've got yourself a meal fit for any down-to-earth foodie.

Chiko Rolls

What goes into a Chiko Roll? Nobody really knows. Some say it's made up of cabbage and carrots, some say it's just a mystery mix.

One thing's for sure – this iconic Aussie snack is loved by all, from the youngest kids to the oldest pensioners. Whether you like yours steamed or deep-fried, this fried pocket of unmentionables always hits the spot.

Just be careful not to take a big first bite – Chiko Roll-related mouth burnings are up 36% this year.

Tim Tams

Go to any store, supermarket, mum and dad shop or petty station in Australia and you'll find Tim Tams.

These chocolate-coated caramel biscuits have been a staple in Aussie pantries since 1964 and they don't show signs of going out of style any time soon. The best way to eat a Tim Tam is in the “Tim Tam slam” – bite off the two far corners of the biscuit, use it like a straw to drink your hot beverage and then eat it all up. Delicious!

Fairy bread

What do white bread, butter and hundreds-and-thousands sprinkles all have in common? They make up the quintessential Aussie snack – fairy bread.

This simple delicacy is a favourite amongst kids and a popular birthday party treat. Just butter the white bread on one side and place it face down on a plate of sprinkles. The resulting food is a rainbow of colour and flavour that's sure to delight any tastebud (yep... even you adults)!

Witchitty grubs

While Vegemite, Chiko Rolls and Tim Tams are guaranteed signs that you're dealing with an Aussie, nothing screams Australian like the witchitty grub.

For those who don't know, these little critters are a type of beetle larvae that can be found in the Australian bush. And despite their name, witchitty grubs are actually quite delicious when cooked – they have a crunchy, nutty flavour... kinda like bush popcorn.

Of course, you won't find them on any store shelves, so if you want to try one, you'll have to head out and hunt for them yourself. Good luck!

Anzac biscuits

When Anzac day rolls around, the dawn service has ended and the parades have finished, it's time to whip up a batch of Anzac biscuits.

This traditional Australian snack dates back to the First World War, when wives and mothers would bake these cookies for their soldiers out fighting in the war. Made with rolled oats, flour and golden syrup, these biscuits are an Aussie classic – and they're just as popular today!

So that about does it for our list of foods that only Aussies eat. From Zooper Doopers to Anzac biscuits, there's something for everyone. And that's why we love to call this place home.

P.S. Don't get us started on the contentious topic of pineapple on pizza. Now that's a whole other story!
